Morning update as I wrap up CrossFit and reflecting on the on-call shift from the weekend.
I need more rest.
And I need to lead by example here to take the morning off because I'm truly not recovered from a sleep perspective.

all right Monday morning CrossFit out of the way I don't want to put it in drive I got it back out of this spot that would have been pretty bad but yeah the workout was pretty good finished it I kicked my butt but I finished it that's what matters I guess uh it was like a partner workout they actually paired me out with my wife who's significantly better at CrossFit than I am um so that was nice um yeah I'm out of breath uh no it's good because she's uh in terms of like skill level and stuff like she's she's very strong but she's also like she got the skills and stuff she's been doing it for a few years now four five four years 5 years something like that um so it's good because like a lot of the movements that are Olympic lifting
I understand what's supposed to happen but I uh I have never practiced them in my life so if I were to watch someone else do it I could probably even offer tips and advice because I would say like oh the bar is too far far from your body or um you're not like pulling your hips forward that kind of thing like those types of things like at a high level I would know but I I can't see them for myself and then the other problem for me at least is that a lot of these things are kind of like especially from a bodybuilding perspective they're like cheating or or like something you're not supposed to be doing uh like for the core of your workout and it's because when you're bodybuilding you're basically trying to create as much effort for your muscles as possible and
for for something like CrossFit um it's it's not cheating like the movements are designed such that you uh you're getting sort of like the best leverage right so even like a pull-up and Crossfit a lot of people freak out about like Kipping pull-ups because you're swinging but like it's technically a whole different movement like it's not the same thing at all you just happen to call it a pullup and you happen to be pulling yourself up to a bar otherwise it's the whole thing is wildly different but um so like that that kind of stuff throws me off um today like we were doing Olympic lifting I don't really have an excuse for that but something like a push press where you have the are at your sort of at your neck level and you kind of like dip a little bit and and p
uh push it above your head like even the dip alone to kind of thrust into it from a bodybuilding perspective like it's not not cheating but like you wouldn't be like for me I would rather do it strict and how just my shoulders do all of the work entirely so um there are these patterns that I have to kind of untrain which is which is very challenging and I want to give you a quick example before we talk about some software stuff just cuz this is top of mind for me but um in the workout today we were doing what's called a jerk and kind it's a little bit more than the push press I was explaining so one of the challenges is like I need to be able to start pushing the bar above head but you need to get underneath it so you
need to like squat down and get underneath the bar as it's traveling up and um one of the things I was struggling with was like okay I can at the weight I'm using it's very light for me to to even do it strict and press it over my head with no other movement my body and now I'm going okay I need to try and like basically add a jump into it I need to get like hip extension and a dip into it and any of these things I'm adding in just throw me off I'm like it's it's too awkward like it's making it harder like why can't I put this over my head and I can do it strictly it doesn't make any sense it's kind of frustrating but I learned today that a cue that works for me one sec I have to turn
here uh a Quee that works really well for me is that the instead of trying to think about how do I add a jumping motion into the overhead press instead of doing that I I needed to stop and say okay I have the bar at my shoulders how do I jump with it here and I literally just stood there for a few rounds of just like having the bar at my shoulders and jumping with it not trying to put it over my head yet just jumping and what's interesting about that was that I could start to feel like as I'm jumping you can feel when the weight is kind of coming off of your chest because as you jump it kind of accelerates the bar to come off of your chest and then I was like okay now now I can feel where the bar
is becoming like weightless because it's traveling with my body and that's when you need to start like putting your arms in to to push it over your head so I basically had to like approach it a different way to learn the pattern so still a long long long way to go but kind of interesting just different ways to think about approaching things you could probably apply that concept to to many things right like I don't know if you were if you're getting stuck on the computer science Concepts you could probably just say look instead of approaching it this exact same way over and over if it's not sticking for you like try a different way right sometimes all it takes is one other way that you haven't thought of before and it's crystal clear to you other times it is just truly repetition of Concepts
and then they start to stick but um I thought that was an interesting example so yeah on call for me this past weekend was brutal not because it was hard because it wasn't was very very easy uh on call but was brutal because it's overnight and I don't have a way to I don't have a way to get my phone to only ring for like an email filter if that makes sense so while I'm on call like technically I should be responding to like if people are emailing our team and asking questions and stuff like that I should be responding to that now was a holiday in China and this was during like off hours for us so like China daytime um odds are there's not going to be much of anything if at all but I need to be ready for that I need
to respond to paging things so like I need to have my phone on and it meant that like while I went to bed until 6:00 in the morning it's basically waking up every 15 minutes roughly because my phone would be ringing sorry I drank water now I can't met of breath uh so it was really dumb because like it would wake me up like every 15 minutes roughly and um i' check my phone and it's just like an email not related to like being paged or some incident or something so I'm like okay back to sleep so meant that I had two nights in a row of like basically completely bull crap sleep just like nothing consistent so I'm absolutely dead this morning um I'm I'm going to take the morning off work I was thinking about this when I was driving to CrossFit I'm
like I'm not I'm not okay mentally like in terms of rest so I'm going to take the morning off I'm going to go back to sleep when I get home uh and I just have to let it's kind of funny the uh I have a a 101 meeting with uh the woman for my team who was also I was her backup and she was my backup this weekend so I had the same kind of thing going on uh and I'm going to feel I'm going to feel bad if she's like oh I'm totally good to go uh but uh I I know that I'm personally not and you know if she if she messaged me or like I should let her know actually when I when I tell her you know if you need to take the morning please do usually for us for on
Call shifts um we get a we get like a day in Li so if you take your on call shift you book a day usually shortly after where you can just take it off uh cuz it's pretty stressful especially if you're getting paged like outside of work hours and stuff it's like you're just adding in extra work time so yeah they give us a day in L now for these ones they didn't really talk about it because it's not a full on call shift it's just a couple night nights but given that they're literally nights at the opposite uh of our our normal schedule uh I like and we also have discretionary time off like literally this is the thing that's kind of weird right like let's use the person on my team as an example she could tell me that she just wants to
take the day off that's fine like aside from the on call stuff right discretionary time off she's allowed to ask for the just to take the time off um but a lot of people don't like even if they need it which is why I'm saying it's kind of weird right so uh yes I should be able to like regardless of the on call shift if I needed to take a day off I could I know that my not only is it like just policy but I know my manager would be like that's fine uh I try to communicate that to people on my team like hey if you just need a day off like ask like just take the day it's fine um as long as people are getting their stuff done there's literally nothing to be concerned about but the the problem is that
people don't right it's uh I I don't know in my experience I think it's kind of funny that when people talk about time off and stuff like that from like a company policy perspective everyone's like oh people are going to abuse all the all the time they're just going to take like you know half the year off by like taking vacations and stuff and it's like people aren't like that man I think I've in my entire career so far which has been like 4 14 years so far um maybe one or two people I felt like abused time and that's just like a hunch I don't even have like evidence of that it's just how it like seemed to be to me otherwise like it's almost the exact opposite where people are are not taking enough time off and that's another reason why with discretionary
time off and stuff a lot of people freak out cuz they're like oh this is just a company's way to like abuse employees more because they know they're not going to take the time but the way I see it personally is like I think discretionary time off is awesome like I think that's a pretty amazing thing for a company to do but and there's a but it takes everyone in management and Leadership positions to remind people to take the time off because I feel like it's there's got to be stats on it but anecdotally I feel like people don't take enough time off in general so I think it's up to management and Leadership to be able to remind people like you need to be taking more time off because otherwise what will happen is like you know 8 months will go by in a
year and someone hasn't taken any vacation and it's like that's it's not okay um and I say that as someone who used to I still probably would like I don't take a lot of vacation so I I know what it's like um cuz I like to work and I find that I'm busy so it's like it's hard to take vacation so my wife is my forcing function for me to take vacation which is great because I'm very bad at it and I can just rely on her being like hey we have a trip hey I want to do this and it's like cool like put it in the calendar I'll book the time off but anyway I'm going to let her know that I got to we'll move our oneon-one till tomorrow um which is fine like I think people on my team were pretty
flexible about like if we move one on- On's like a day or something I don't love doing it but I don't like canceling them cuz I think that's pretty unfair um it's unfair to people to not have the opportunity for conversation but you know the same thing sometimes people are like hey like they'll message me and they'll say I don't have a lot to discuss in our 101 but like here's a couple of updates like we can probably save some time and I'm not like opposed to that right like I don't want to like force people into what is this person doing they're driving like 20 on the highway it's amazing um we do one-on ones every week if someone on a particular week is like I don't have a lot to talk about I hav't heads down with something everything's good but like I'm
not going to like force them into a one1 but it's more about like the patterns right like if if every week someone was like oh nothing to talk about I would be like okay we got to like let's find some let's find a way to make this more effective um but if it's periodically someone's like hey like I'm I'm busy on call I've uh or I'm busy working on this project or I got a lot of meetings or whatever um I had a couple days off and I'm trying to catch up like if they want the time back to themselves and they're like I I'm communicating to you that I don't have any blocks or any concerns like okay that's fine fine by me it's just the the patterns right if it's over and over that's where I want to make sure I can jump
in and be like ah what are we doing here like it's a same thing with status updates right I think I've talked about this before but I'm fine if people want to give status updates in a 101 but if that's all we ever use 101's for then I go okay like we should try switching this up because it's not effective in my opinion for them they might feel like hey I'm giving my manager what they want I'm giving them status updates but that's not what I want a 101 for it's not for me um it's for them right so if if I'm not demonstrating to them that they can get more value out of the oneon-one then um that's on me to kind of do a better job there pop up up one more ready I love that sound I need a Lamborghini please I
was looking at Lamborghinis on auto trader I've concluded um that would be one of the most irresponsible things I could ever do but it would be super cool would be super cool I think uh two cars I want at some point in my adult life are a Lamborghini that's kind of like a got to do that at some point and I'm not the kind of I don't need like a new Lamborghini and I I've never yeah I've never bought a new car it's always been used I buy a used Lamborghini for sure someone can take the initial depreciation I am absolutely okay with that uh but I want a Lamborghini at some point that would be cool and a rollsroyce I like cars so those are two for me that I would like to have in my garage at some point but um I think
for us next thing is like house or we like our house but I think we're both of the mindset like area that we live in we don't we're not in love with um it's kind of like I don't know it's like the our neighborhood like our little neighborhood's not bad or subdivision it's fine but like pretty close by there's some I don't know like it's a little there's some areas that are kind of sketchy near us and it's like just not not in love with it so there's no reason we have to live where we live right so uh just like interest rates are kind of crappy houses are expensive so sorry there's a Mercedes van that's like tailgating me you're not going to do that pal and he's doing it again look he's coming up on the left look at this idiot get ready
for an idiot there he is absolute dummy he's going to do it to this guy too he's you can't see but he's tailgating this car up here some people AR uh not fit for the road not this guy though I'm I'm fit for the road but anyway yeah house house is next for us we want to kind of find an upgrade I think but it's challenging I was uh I know this wasn't too much software engineering but you're going to get two more videos today cuz I'm going to the office and coming back so let me have this one okay um the way that I like save money and stuff like I I put a bunch of money aside for like retirement and I I don't like touching it so the problem that ends up happening is that I when people talk about like their
standard of living and stuff so I have whatever income I have today and whatever part of that is going away to Investments like I like being able to grow Investments because I'm like hey I want I want to be able to rely on that at some point down the road um so I absolutely focus on that but it means that a a decent chunk of my income is just like evaporating from my uh like our monthly spend right like it's impos we can't go spend that money because it's just it's in investment accounts technically I can move it but I don't want to so when we talk about getting a house and stuff it's like my the only way without touching Investments and things like that is that my salary needs to go up dramatically and I say salary specifically because if uh you know
if if Microsoft or if I had a different job if they were to just give me more stock like that's Investments it's just parked I'm not I'm not really touching that so I need my salary to go up so that I have more of a monthly spend because I don't like uh getting rid of stock like again that's an investment I'm holding on to it it's kind of a funny mindset thing so for us to get a new house the range you want to upgrade to it's like 50% to 100% more mortgage right and make up numbers like if it were if the mortgage is $2,000 it's no it's right now it would be like it's either 3,000 or 4,000 so the way that I have to think about this is like how much money like what's if we have money coming in every month
and we're paying for our living expenses if uh if every month we're kind of like seems like we're on par and when I say on par like I like I said the investment money and stuff's already going away so if whatever's left in the bank account feels like it's on par that's not good enough I need to have 50% more to double double uh the monthly income to to afford the mortgage so that we for a house we want to get so it's just tricky cuz I have to I have to figure that out cuz that's our our next thing um I think house for us will be the next sort of upgrade at some point um I know I'm not huge on vacations my wife is so making sure that I have uh disposable income for that but beyond that I would love a
Lamborghini but that's that's a long way out I think um who knows maybe I won't win the lottery maybe this channel will become so big and awesome that I'll drive around a l Lamborghini instead of this car this is a nice car though I like this car it's not a Lamborghini though that's okay that is okay but Lamborghini sound really nice this car sounds pretty good too I don't I've watched back a couple of the videos that go online and it's like it's not as uh clear I got to I got to get my TT fixed up because I think you guys will enjoy it it's uh it's pretty Rowdy it's so this car is an 8 cylinder uh twin turbo so it sounds like kind of kind of angry and kind of big but the TT is like it's a five cylinder which is
really weird because like why why an odd number but it's five and it's got a big turbo on it and usually when you're in a car like you hear the exhaust right like that's the the thing that you're listening to in the TT the turbo is so big and it's been modified uh can't remember what the modification of the turbo is but they basically they change the uh the fins on it to have basically they allow I don't necessarily think it's more air flow but the air is coming in sort of at a different angle on the fins and it makes it very loud so when I step on the gas in the TT which is over there when I step on the gas um you don't just hear exhaust you actually hear the turbo the turbo is louder than the exhaust sometimes so I
want to get that going again but the uh it's the battery um I was Skyping my parents this weekend I'll wrap this video up in just a sec Skyping my parents this weekend and my dad was like oh we haven't heard much about the TT cuz that car has been non-stop problems since I've owned it for it's almost it's 9 years now that I've had that car um non-stop problems 100% of the time all the time problems so he's like oh it's weird we haven't heard about it and I said yeah it's cuz there's a problem the battery so he was trying to explain oh like you should take it out of the car and I was like hey no like like I I had it modified so that the I basically have a built-in trickle charger into the trunk so I can go plug
in my car because it has battery problems and he was like oh well clearly it's draining the the battery faster than the trickle chargers doing it I'm like there's like there's basically nothing left hooked up to that battery like all of like there's lights and stuff all over that car you can't see cuz they're not on but um they're not even connected right now so I'm like literally there's there's nothing to drain it um and then I said I can't remember exactly what I said um I said oh maybe the um the outlet reset because if there's water or whatever if it senses a short like it'll it'll just reset the outlet like maybe it reset and I plugged it in and didn't turn the charger back on and my wife turned to me and she said oh yeah like I've been unplugging that regularly
and I was like oh so I thought this entire time my car was sat sitting here plugged in and she's routinely just like disconnecting it and I think I have to go to the charger and actually say like turn it on so I basically thought it was plugged in for months and it was just sitting here and drained which is fine uh cuz if I just need a new battery so be it it's a pain cuz it's a few hundred bucks but it's way better than there being this new problem it's it's sounds like it's the same problem it's my crappy battery um or sorry crappy whatever setup is draining the battery but it's not a new issue so new battery I have have to change the struts that hold up the trunk for Ryan Murphy and other people in uh in the UK I
think you guys call it the boot the bonnets in the front the boots in the back the boot now now I sound Canadian right cuz I am and uh so battery struts for the boot or the hatch and then then it needs an oil change very badly and then two other things I need to get the audio system tuned because it's all connected and sounds like it's underwater just because it's not tuned properly and then I want to retune the car because uh I have suspicions that it's not running quite right and I don't need to make more power or anything it's 650 horsepower even if they have to dial it back um then do it I'd rather just be able to drive it around cuz right now it's uh it's not driving it's sitting but anyway that's it I'm going to go for my
nap and I we see you guys in a bit take care
Frequently Asked Questions
These Q&A summaries are AI-generated from the video transcript and may not reflect my exact wording. Watch the video for the full context.
- How do you approach learning complex CrossFit movements like the jerk?
- I found that instead of trying to add the jumping motion into the overhead press all at once, I needed to break it down. I practiced just jumping with the bar at my shoulders to feel the weight becoming weightless as it travels with my body. This helped me understand when to start pushing the bar overhead, making the movement less awkward and more manageable.
- What challenges do you face with on-call shifts and how do you manage rest?
- My recent on-call shifts were brutal because my phone kept waking me up every 15 minutes with non-urgent emails, disrupting my sleep. To manage this, I decided to take the morning off work to catch up on rest. I also communicate with my team about taking time off when needed, especially after stressful on-call periods, to ensure proper recovery.
- Why do you think people don't take enough time off work despite having discretionary time off policies?
- In my experience, many people don't take enough time off even when policies allow it because they either feel guilty or don't prioritize rest. I believe it's important for management and leadership to actively remind and encourage people to take their time off. Otherwise, employees might go months without vacation, which isn't healthy or sustainable.
